Guitar Scale Lesson

This guitar scale lesson is designed to help you understand the guitar. The free scale lessons on this page will build you a great foundation.

Guitar Scales are an important thing for any guitarist to know, but the patterns will take some time for you to memorize. Don't get discouraged... Practice, Practice, Practice! To get good at playing anything on your guitar, practice is the key.

When playing through these scales on your guitar, you should play with a metronome. This will help to keep your scale notes evenly timed.

You can download some really cool metronomes online- and the one I'm using right now to practice is the Ultimate Metronome . It wasn't free, but it has definitely been a worthwhile investment. Since starting with the Ultimate Metronome, my speed on the guitar has almost doubled. It's a great practice tool for any guitarist. This metronome will increase the effectiveness of every guitar scale lesson and practice session. But if you can't afford it, you can surely find a decent cheap metronome online.

It's time to learn guitar scales!

Here's the first one that you should definitely know how to play.

C-Major Guitar Scale:

E --------------------------------------------0--1--3--

B -----------------------------------0--1--3-----------

G -----------------------------0--2--------------------

D --------------------0--2--3--------------------------

A -----------0--2--3-----------------------------------

E --0--1--3--------------------------------------------

The Key of C-major is the one that you should understand first. There are no sharps or flats in the C-Major key.

This means the notes will be A, B, C, D, E, F, G! It's just like the Alphabet :)

In this version of the C-major scale, you are starting on your low E-string.

So the notes that you are playing begin E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E... and so on. Music notes range from A-G, and sharps and flats fill in the gaps.

(Example: D sharp is between D and E... where D flat is between C and D)

The reason that you are learning the C-major scale first, is because once you know this one scale (well... there are 4 versions you'll need to learn) then you will be able to name any note on your guitar!

Stay tuned! We're going to move up the neck and look at another version of the C-Major Scale in the Next Guitar Scale Lesson...
